The best advice I can give for improving space planning skills is to make yourself to design the same space over and over again. Exhaust the possibilities. And then from there move on to the next space and start the process anew. One of my intentions for 2022 is to spend more time doing things that energize me, with photography being on my list. Recently, I did an exercise where I curated a collection of things in my studio and then photographed them as many ways as I could think of. While doing it, I learned that there is a ton of cross-over between the two creative disciplines of photography and space planning, especially with this particular exercise. While composing these shots, I found myself approaching the task the same way I do when I sit down at the drafting board to design a floor plan. *Follow the link in my bio to see how all of this relates and for more space planning tips.

When I was a new graduate from design school, I remember bringing up aging in place with my clients as we worked on their projects together. It was never comfortable but it was something that was worth talking about. With the advent of social media and blogs, etc., clients today are savvy and typically well versed on almost every aspect of design, including aging in place. It’s often just part of their objective list that they’ve created on their own for their custom home design. *Follow the link in my bio to learn more. #orchardabodeproject

I was scanning my notes and sketches for an upcoming Floor Plan Review and happened to grab an old thumb drive that had tons of design sketches on it. It was like going through memory lane. These elevations were from a primary suite remodel / addition that I designed with fresh traditional details. #projecttwelvepeaks

We’ve carefully designed the #orchardabodeproject with an aging-in-place focus. That way it will allow for the clients and their extended family to enjoy the spaces for years to come. Plus it just makes a whole lot of sense for custom home design. *Follow the link in my bio for design plans, guides and inspiration.

See the wood stain sample? That’s for the decorative beam that will be placed above the picture window, where the free standing tub will be in front of. It just might be my favorite part of the design. *Follow the link in my bio to see more about this beautiful bathroom design for the #orchardabodeproject (a whole-house remodel and addition located in Northern California).

In my many years as a custom home designer, spatial design and floor plan trends aren’t lost on me. What’s interesting about the whole process is that they are client driven. Of course there are lot’s of outside influences that direct clients in establishing what they want to include in the design of their custom homes, but in the end they are the ones making the final decisions. That’s pretty powerful when you think about it. What other industry bends to the will of the customer? *Follow the link in my bio to see 2022 design trends (that really aren’t so trendy).

Recreation and entertainment spaces have always been included in custom floor plans, but since 2020, almost immediately after we went into quarantine (March 2020, due to COVID-19), straight away my clients put more focus and emphasis on creating spaces in their homes that would allow them to still prosper in similar circumstances. During 2022, we’ll continue to see an assortment of spaces included in custom homes that create self-contained living, and eliminate the need to depend on outside sources for gathering, entertainment, movement, games and work-out spaces. *Follow the link n my bio to see more custom home trends for 2022. #projectstwaterways
